Dry skin is medically known as xerosis or xeroderma. This is characterized by lack of water in the superficial layer of the skin. Symptoms are itchy, rough dry skin, red patches in the skin that are most common in areas of the lower leg, forearms and the hands.

Causes of dry skin

1. External factors like cold temperature, low humidity, overwashing with harsh soaps and overuse of sanitizers and alcohol.

2. Internal factors like age, genetics (ichthyosis), family history, allergy and health conditions like atopic dermatitis, acne, eczema, psoriasis, diabetes and hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

3. Medications like diuretics, cholesterol-lowering drugs and retinoids.

Treatment:

1. Moisturisers or emollients like Cetaphil lotion, Jason Soothing Aloe Vera cream

2. Topical steroid creams

Hydrocortisone ( mild strength) face, underarm, groin

Triamcinolone (medium strength)

Clobetasol (strong strength)

3. Oral like Diphenhydramine, Hydroxyzine, Cetirizine, Loratadine

Emollients are moisturizing treatments that restore the skin barrier and reduce water loss by providing a protective film. They are preservative-free and fragrance-free unlike other cosmetics. They also work to reduce scaling and ease itching and allow other creams or ointment to get absorbed by the skin. During flare-ups, they are used together with topical steroids. Apply emollients first then wait for 10-15minutes before applying the topical steroids. The skin should be moist but not slippery when applying steroids.

Lotion and cream are used in mild skin dryness and flare-ups of weeping eczema.
Ointments are used in moderate to severe dryness.
